Rural Church of San Pietro

Ā Ā

The rural church of San Pietro is roughly 3 km from the town, on a saddle between the slope of a small range to the south-west and the hill topped by Nuraghe of Santu Perdu. The church remained abandoned for over a century. In the 1920s, the parish priest, Father Vittorio Cannas, oversaw its repair and, on 12 September of the same year, solemn celebrations were reinstated with a large public turnout. The church we see today is the result of more recent renovation work carried out in 1999. According to local elders, a man known as the Hermit once lived near the church. He served as its custodian and lived alone, supported by charitable offerings. During the feast of the saint, shepherds would offer him not only bread but also large quantities of meat, which he cooked in the oven and then handed out free of charge to worshippers attending the celebrations.
