Railway Station

The first railway line between Fidenza and Salsomaggiore, was inaugurated on 5 May 1890. Salsomaggiore was a small town, acquiring in those years a good reputation as a place for thermal treatments and pleasant holidays. the first trains used to runs, were composed by a steam engine with two passengers cars and a freight car. Among the distinguished visitors, there is also the great musician Giuseppe Verdi, who spends holiday periods in Tabiano, between 1858 and 1892, to enjoy the termal water benefits. The engineer Cervi from Rome, designed the nowadays station in the 1930s, as a monumental gateway to the Ville d’Eau. The Station, with its singular size, very well interprets the social and sumptuous identity of Salsomaggiore Terme,
capital of Liberty and avant-garde center for Spa treatments. With its elegance, the building welcomes distinguished holidaymakers getting by train: upper middle class families, nobles and businessmen, as well as international celebrities. Such an important station is astonishing also for workers and peasants, coming from the province for thermal treatments at the Tommasini Institute, the so-called Workers Spa, created by the INPS, national institute of social welfare, for the poorest care.
The building incorporates architectural elements inspired by the most important European stations. For example, the barrel vault overlooking the travelers gallery, with a wide skylight and the large semicircle windows called thermal baths, refers to the
ancient Roman baths. It is a very common model in the most important head stations built between the nineteenth and 20th century. The main elevations are enhanced by white and pink travertine cladding, while in the travelers’ lobby there is also a lift, a very innovative technological tool. The project owns a very interesting decorative apparatus, in Art Deco style, created by the artist Giulio Rufa. The works are inspired by the theme of healthy water, from the charming fountain on the rail platform, up to the tiles and frescoes. Noteworthy are also panels and windows of the vault, as well as the wall paintings, with life scenes inspired by the classical iconography.
