Mazzini Park

In the early 20th Century a small Spa city like Salsomaggiore, is becoming a Ville d’Eau and a European capital of the Liberty.
For adapting the city to the exquisite taste of other international Spas, a season of important public projects, including the City Park, begins. This green space following the model of the most important European urban Parks, aims to be a theatre wing for the city, and a meeting point for hosting public events and exhibitions.
In 1912 the Turin architect Giuseppe Roda begins the Park project. He aims at giving a scenography opening between the city and the landscape. Taking advantage of slopes and natural depressions, the new Park extended for 11 hectares, accentuates the sinuous paths lines, and fosters the visions of romantic settings such as the stream, the little lake with swans and the small rocky
mound overlooked by a pagoda with bridges.
The Park, completed in 1917 is firstly dedicated to the sovereign, Queen Margherita of Savoy, who in those years used to stay at the Grand Hôtel des Thermes. After the Second World War, in 1947, it is named after Giuseppe Mazzini. Over the years the Park has undergone many changes, reducing its area to about 8 hectares. The park represents still today a botanical
excellence, thanks to the many centenary trees planted in the early years. In more recent years, the Park has undergone many restorations, and the most significant tree species have been catalogued and reported in the project called Trees of the Queen: a botanical discovery itinerary creating an interesting open-air exhibition within the Park.
