The Dining Room
THE ROOM: decorated in pure Art Nouveau style, large display cases containing antique dinner and glassware stand out against plum-coloured walls, illuminated by the warm light of a striking wrought-iron chandelier.
TRADITIONS: RECEPTIONS: in Sicily, hospitality is an age-old value, in which elegance, opulence, beauty and warmth came together to make social occasions unique and memorable. The art of entertaining in Sicily is an expression of an ancient culture of hospitality, known as xenƬa, rooted in the traditions of ancient Greece and in the many peoples who have passed through the island over the centuries. In Sicily, guests are sacred, and welcoming them remains a ritual imbued with respect, warmth and generosity. To be considered suitably formal, a seated luncheon had to include at least six courses, in addition dessert, fruit and ices. The careful setting of the table, governed by very strict rules of etiquette, required each place setting to include silver chargers, precious painted porcelain dishes, a range of cut crystal glassware, and heavy cutlery decorated in relief with the family coat of arms, all laid according to a strict layout. The floral decoration, too, had to be well arranged to harmonise with the mise en place.
AND CUSTOMS: the dress displayed here is in Victorian style, distinguished by its deep burgundy colour and trimmed with striking white lace inserts. This type of garment, often paired with full skirts with trains, is typical of womenās fashion in the late nineteenth century, particularly between 1870 and 1890. The bodice features a high neckline and long sleeves with decorative ruffles on the cuffs. White lace appliquĆ©s are arranged in a V-shape across the bodice and along the waist, a common decorative element to emphasise the silhouette of the period.
