Palazzo Monelli Historic House Museum

Ā Ā

Dating back to the seventeenth century, Palazzo Monelli now presents itself as an elegant neoclassical building. Its solid structure enabled the building to withstand a terrible earthquake in 1693, which devastated Val di Noto and led to the rebuilding of many towns in the Baroque style.
The palazzo is one of the most significant buildings on the eastern side of Ragusa Ibla, and its simple, linear faƧade – enriched with neoclassical cornices and entablatures – follows the winding route of the main street, which has remained unchanged for a thousand years, even withstanding the changes made to the city’s layout after the earthquake.
Built in square cut stone with a traditional plaster render, the building has two floors.
From the elegant portal, a double flight of stairs in pietra pece stone leads to the interiors of the piano nobile, the main reception floor. Here, the rooms have many decorative features, including polychrome and gold-leaf stucco, original wallpapers, doors with gilded friezes, twentieth-century curtains and drapery, floors in pietra pece and soft limestone, period furnishings, a fine library and even a church. There is also a ā€˜secret’ garden enclosed by tall dry-stone walls.
Owned by the same family and its descendants over the centuries, the palazzo preserves the history, splendour, habits, and customs of those who once lived here, while maintaining all its authenticity and historic charm.
