Freedom Square
Ā Ā
The current Freedom Square, once known as the Piazza Santa Maria, is dominated by the imposing facade of the cathedral dedicated to the Virgin, from which it gave its name to the square.
The current characteristics is the result of many changes that have already begun with the monuments that the village had known in Imperial times, as witnessed by the paving of the hole and the early medieval burial grounds visible in the essay at the foot of the cathedral.
This essay is also visible archaeological stratigraphy and is highlighted, thanks to various illustrations, dislocate who has known the square over the centuries, until time has given it, its current look.
According to the Statute of the City, a Square was intended for the space and included the seven chains that were positioned in 1401 that delimited the seven access routes corresponding to the same number of districts in which the town is divided into.
Their function was specifically legal because, according to the notarial protocols, the offense committed within the square was punished with a double penalty.
They overlook the square, starting clockwise from the cathedral, the bishop’s palace, the palace of the clock, the Nuzzi palace (now the Town Hall) and a building that still retains the medieval arches, along with other buildings used for commercial activities.
