A single nave, already an integral part of the Italo-greek monastery of the tenth century, the remains of which are on the right flank, the church has an interesting anomaly in its development. About halfway along its long sides it truncates its linear extension, changing direction and determining a different development of the perimeter walls. It is the result of the enlargement of the primordial Byzantine structure executed in the 17th century, which encompassed the still visible area of “subsellia”, masonry benches built around the walls, on which the monks took place during prayer and liturgical celebrations. The facade, facing west, presents on the front door a little niche, where the traces of a fresco depicting the Madonna and Child are distinguishable. The more recent area is marked by stone altars and mortar, topped by the seventeenth-century frescoes. The weight of time and the destructive force of the weather have put its survival at risk. One of these frescoes is still visible and depicts the Deposition from the Cross, a great pathos scene where the dead Christ is surrounded by Joseph of Arimathea, Saint John, the Mother and Mary of Magdala. Following a similar fate to the church of Santa Maria Mercuri, the apse, characteristic of the sacred place, was reduced to simple niche to house the statue of San Leonardo. Between the left wall and the apse there are two frescoes depicting an unidentified holy abbot or bishop and San Fantino Juniore, abbot and spiritual leader of the monastic eparchy Mercurion dating back to the tenth century with an inscription A. D. CCCC XI (1441). The current name of the church was given to honor Saint Leonard of Noblat, noble Merovingian who lived in Gaul between the fifth and sixth century, whose cult was imported by the Normans in southern Italy.
