Square Sebastiano Satta
ON the occasion of the celebrations for the centenary of the birth of the poet Sebastiano Satta, the sculptor Costantino Nivola from Orani created in 1966 an outdoor work of art: it is a minimalist square with granite blocks from Mount Ortobene. Its symbolism refers to the ancestral Sardinian matriarchal society, represented by the cavities in the rocks, within which the figure of the poet finds new life in eight bronze statuettes. Nivola wanted the houses overlooking the square, including the one standing right where the poet used to live, to be plastered in white to give symbolism of the place a sense of unity. The square is like a haven of peace in the bustle of the city centre, a place where to enjoy silence and meditation. In summer it hosts performances and concerts. The square is an authentic masterpiece where Nivola’s genius was able to combine his great experience in the field of modern art with the values of Sardinian culture.
