Cathedral of St. Mary of the Snows

The temple was completed in 1853. It was a majestic building for the religious needs of the Nuoro of that time, dedicated to the cult of Our Lady of the Snows, the city’s patron saint. The building has a façade in the neoclassical style, with three imposing portals upon which are engraved biblical and local history scenes. The interior consists of a central nave with a barrel vault and has three large apsed chapels on each side. The altar attributed to Francesco Cucchiari and Michele Fiaschi is overlooked by two galleries, once reserved for the noble. Behind the altar is the wooden choir. Among the treasures housed in the building we find The Dead Christ by Alessandro Tiarini, a work dating back to the 17th century, and two canvases by Bernardino Palazzi depicting The Supper at Emmaus and a Deposition of Christ. Especially remarkable is the Way of the Cross, made by Carmelo Floris and Giovanni Ciusa Romagna in 1953 on the occasion of the basilica’s consecration centenary.
