“G. Asproni” National Archeeologic Museum

The museum was inaugurated in 2002 and is housed in the 19th-century building that once belonged to Giorgio Asproni, a 19th-century intellectual and politician born in Bitti. It consists of the archaeological materials previously preserved in the speleo-archaeological museum, which had also been enriched with the municipal collection of the early 20th century, and of the materials acquired afterwards by the competent department in the course of its activity, as well as donations from private individuals. The exhibition offers an intense testimony to the rich paleontological and archaeological heritage of the Nuoro area: from the finds of vertebrates from Mount Tuttavista and the Corbeddu Cave to the findings of the Palaeolithic of Ottana and the objects of daily life from the Neolithic. Also present are materials from the cultures of the Copper Age of Filigosa, Abealzu, Mount Claro and Bonnanaro. The artefacts from the Nuragic period and the Bronze and Iron Ages were found in important sites such as Su Tempiesu in Orune and Sa Sedda ‘e Sos Carros in Oliena; the collection also includes the reconstruction of the sacred source of Oliena. The exhibition itinerary ends with the mediaeval age and artefacts from the Fava Castle in Posada.
