Corso Garibaldi

The ancient Bia Majore, renamed Corso Garibaldi since 1883, links the two neighbourhoods of Séuna and Santu Prédu. It has always been the city’s main meeting place and commercial hub. It was paved with granite in 1894. It once housed numerous cafes, such as Tettamanzi, a popular meeting place for the local bourgeoisie, which was also mentioned in Salvatore Satta’s book The Day of Judgment. At No. 62 we find the home of the painter Antonio Ballero and at No. 60 Attilio Deffenu’s birthplace. During the Fascist period a solemn commemorative plaque, made by the sculptor Francesco Ciusa, was affixed to Attilio Deffenu’s birthplace. Located between the houses of the painter Antonio Ballero and the poet Sebastiano Satta, it was designed as a tribute to the valiant fellow citizen and martyr of the First World War, enriched with a commemorative bust. In the evening, the Corso becomes a popular meeting point for young people at the end of their walk in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele (known as “The Gardens”). In summer, the central part of the Corso, with its ancient bars, remains lively until late at night.
