Statue of Christ the Redeemer

The statue is a bronze work placed on a peak of Mount Ortobene at a height of 925 metres above sea level. It was made by the sculptor Vincenzo Jerace and erected in 1901 on the occasion of the Jubilee celebration, when Pope Leo XIII ordered the erection of monuments in honour of Christ the Redeemer in all regions of Italy. The statue alone, without the pedestal, is over 4 metres high and weighs about 2 tons. The work was cast in Naples and arrived in Sardinia by sea, divided into various parts that were transported to the top of the mountain with ox carts. The imposing statue is perfectly balanced and only after 111 years of exposure to strong winds and significant temperature changes was it necessary to carry out a structural restoration. On the palm of his blessing hand, turned towards the city of Nuoro, the artist had the following dedication engraved: To Luisa Jerace, who died while her Vincenzo was sculpting her. Behind the right foot of Christ we can see the face of a child that represents humanity, defenceless just like a child in the sight of God. On 29th August a Solemn Mass is celebrated to conclude a festival full of charm and beauty for the parade of traditional costumes and horsemen from all over Sardinia.
