Fifty metres away from the Church of Solitude, we find the monument entitled “Andando via” [“Going Away”], conceived by the Sardinian artist Maria Lai as a tribute to Grazia Deledda, Nobel Prize laureate for literature in 1926. Located in a secluded and silent, place it offers an opportunity for concentration and meditation. Housed in a rocky niche surrounded by pine trees, after a long path, it goes through the wood and leads upwards, towards the summit of Mount Ortobene. The work opens up to heaven and earth and suggests a way forward to rediscover oneself. The artist wanted the monument to be placed far away from the urban noise, embellished by the majesty of the surrounding mountains. The work features a free space, but it is clear that you have to enter through that door. It is a high quadrangular opening, a passageway silhouetted against a geography traced out in the sky: one must enter through those worlds, those star lines; it is an invitation to let go of anxieties and wander into another dimension. The whole work is made of concrete, the material of our time, but it is flooded with white light.
