Church of Our Lady of Solitude

This very important building in the history of Nuoro is located at the foot of Mount Ortobene. Since 1956 it has kept the remains of the Nobel Prize-winning writer Grazia Deledda. The current building dates back to 1957 and was made based on a design by the Nuoro-born artist Giovanni Ciusa Romagna on the site where the ancient church once stood (1625). It has the typical architectural features of rural churches. In the interior, with a single nave, we find a Way of the Cross, a bas-relief, a crucifix and some candlesticks made by Eugenio Tavolara based on designs by Giovanni Ciusa Romagna. In the apse there is a panel by the sculptor Gavino Tilocca. The bronze door, depicting Our Lady of Solitude, was sculpted by the Sassari-born artist Eugenio Tavolara. It features three Marian engravings: one depicting Our Lady of Sorrows wrapped in a long cloak; the second the Virgin Mary holding the Child in her arms, a typical representation of the Virgin of Itria, whose cult was present in Nuoro until last century; finally, the third image is a simple Madonna and Child surrounded by angels. A statue of Our Lady of Sorrows is housed inside it.
