Square Salvatore Satta – sculptures by Sciola
The square is one of the many picturesque corners to be found in the Santu Predu neighbourhood near the Grazia Deledda Historic House Museum. It consists of a harmonious granite garden, like a haven that smells of antiquity, whose suggestive character is enhanced by the sculptures of the artist Pinuccio Sciola, the original sculptor of sound stones. These sculptures are similar to large menhirs (made mainly of limestone or basalt stones) in the shape of tall trachyte spikes reminiscent of the breast-shaped baetyls from the island’s ancestral culture. The sculptures’ sound properties are created by making parallel cuts on the rock. These sculptures are capable of generating very structured sounds, with different qualities depending on the density of the stone and the cut, sounds that are reminiscent of glass or metal, wooden instruments and even the human voice.
