Church of the Holy Cross

A manuscript found in the Diocesan Chancery and the building’s Gothic-Catalan style allow us to date the church to the 16th century. It belongs to the parish of St. Mary of the Snows and has been entrusted to the “Daughters of Mary” since 1967. The façade is embellished with pink trachyte. It has a sloping roof and an octagonal dome similar to that in the Church of St. Francis in Lula. The interior has a single nave divided into three spans by pillars and arches of pink trachyte and shows a simple altar placed under the dome. The construction of the church was entrusted to uneducated local workers, referable to the so-called picapedres, workers specialising in stone processing, who were often itinerant. In Sardinia these workers showed great freedom and determination as well as a creative ability that turned them into real master masons.
