Square Su Connottu
This square is dedicated to the popular uprisings that took place in the 19th century against the Piedmontese regime, which had impoverished the local agro-pastoral economy through the enactment of the edict of the so-called Chiudende [concerning the fencing of the plots of land]. Made of granite, it is a welcoming place that introduces the Santu Predu neighbourhood. It is framed by the house where Giampietro Chironi was born, an example of the typical manor of Nuoro. Every year it is transformed into a stage to host a performance dedicated to Pasqua Selis Zau, the woman of the lower class who on 28th April 1868 organised a rebellion against the injustice perpetrated against the Sardinian people, involving all the people of Nuoro. Paskedda led the rebels crying out “A su Connottu!”, whence the name given to the rebellion and to the square itself.
