Sacred Well of Sa Brecca

Ā Ā

The sacred well of Sa Brecca is located at Sàrrala é Sùsu in Tertenia Marina. Two buildings can be distinguished at the site: the well temple and a sub-circular hut with seating along its walls. The sacred well consists of a trapezoidal atrium (later modified to a rectangular shape) opening to the south-west, a stairwell and two superimposed chambers with tholos vaults. The upper chamber is an unusual feature: unlike most sacred wells, the Sa Brèca temple preserves this part of the temple structure almost intact. The hut has a distinctive alpha-shaped layout. Seating made from stacked schist slabs runs along its low walls. Almost directly opposite the entrance is a hearth-altar, also built from schist slabs and vaguely heart-shaped. The temple may have been built between the fourteenth and twelfth centuries BC and remained in use throughout the Nuragic period.
