Barisoni, Sarrala and Santoru Mines

Ā Ā

The Barisoni mine lies uphill from the village of the same name, south of Tertenia Marina, and is easily reached along a dirt track. The mine workings are now difficult to see, as they either lie on private property or have been closed for safety reasons. From the 1920s onwards, numerous prospecting permits were issued for the coastal area between the Tower of San Giovanni di Sarrala and Foxi Manna; these can be traced back to the Sarrala mine, for which a perpetual mining concession was granted for barium- and fluoride-bearing minerals. The Santoru mine is located in a vast area south of the Tertenia coastline, in the Municipality of Lanusei. A prospecting permit for lead, zinc and iron ores, and barite was once active in this area.
