Public Works and economic impact

The Real Ferdinando Bridge is not only a state-of-the-art bridge in technical terms, but also an economically efficient public infrastructure, built at a cost of only 75,000 ducats (i.e. less than 4 million Euros today) and optimized to limit maintenance costs. It also represents a driving force for the development of the area, thanks to its location along the Strada Regia (i.e. Royal Road, as the stretch of the Appian Way from Naples to Rome was called at the time) and near the Regia Posta (Royal Post Stage) built a few years earlier by the engineer Luigi Malesci, Giura’s master.
The enormous impulse to the transit of people and goods generated considerable income for the coffers of the Kingdom and the Duchy of Traetto, as the payment of a toll was required for the “passage”.
The collection of the tax took place at the sentry boxes. These provided accommodation for the persons in charge of surveillance as well as being a warehouse where the materials and equipment for the ordinary maintenance of the bridge were kept, including small spare parts and oil for lubricating metal structural components.
