Palazzo Crivelli Serbelloni, the current seat of the Municipality, witnesses some of the crucial moments that shaped Luino’s history.
Driven by a desire to renew and modernize the village, Antonio Crivelli commissioned Carlo Felice Soave—one of the most active neoclassical architects of the time—to build an impressive lakefront palace to replace the former Marliani residence. Of Soave’s ambitious project, which envisioned a majestic building extending from the Church of San Giuseppe to what is now Piazza Libertà, only the wing adjacent to the church (now the seat of the bank) and the far end of the northern wing were built. The area between the two buildings was occupied by an elegant garden with a huge secular cedar tree.
In 1888, Giuseppe Crivelli Serbelloni, the last heir of the family, sold the palace to the Municipality of Luino, which established its headquarters in the northern wing. Between 1929 and 1930, the ancient façade was replaced with that of the current Municipal Palace.
