Statua e Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi

Ā Ā

The monument, created in 1867 by sculptor Alessandro Puttinati, is among the first erected in honor of Giuseppe Garibaldi during his lifetime. The statue, carved from Brenno Useria stone and clad in marble, portrays the General, wearing the typical Garibaldian shirt and holding a drawn saber.
On the base there is a bronze medallion, realized by sculptor Enrico Bazzaro. It commemorates the 1848 battle between the Austrians and the Garibaldians in Luino. It was installed on August 15, 1885, the anniversary of the historic battle.
Behind the monument lies the spacious Piazza Garibaldi, once the site of a livestock market. At its extremity, on the corner of what is now Via Sereni and Via XV Agosto, there is the elegant pink building where Vittorio Sereni was born on July 27, 1913.
The same building was the headquarters of Il Corriere del Verbano, a historic weekly newspaper founded in 1879, renowned for being one of the oldest periodicals in the area.

Among the prose works of Vittorio Sereni, Il tempo delle fiamme nere recalls events that took place in Luino between the two World Wars, filtered through the author’s childhood memories. Piazza Garibaldi thus becomes the natural setting in which family memories and collective historical events intertwine, restoring the image of a Luino that has now faded into the past.
