Access to the Suspect Area

This is the corridor that surrounds the quarantine station and acts as a physical separation between divisions and as a distribution corridor, linking the arrival docks with the ventilating areas for goods, as well as the subdivisions for crews and passengers. In a southerly direction the corridor leads towards the suspect dock, while to the north it takes us to the lodging area for passengers. When crossing the threshold we enter the zone for goods susceptible to infection, and sailors with a suspect bill of health, here crews and merchandise passed the process of expurge: fumigation, isolation and ventilation. Next to the entrance of each division were the fumigation cabins, constructions with a chimney where fumigations were carried out. There are few remains of these, since they fell in disuse. In this division specific for crew, passengers or merchandise that came from places with endemic diseases and that, therefore, were considered suspects of infection, the period was of twenty days. On the other hand ships that came from areas affected by a recent epidemic or had been in contact with other sick ships were given touched bill of health. The infected bill of health was for ships with declared disease on board.
