Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
The ancient cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is placed in the heart of Piedicastello, the historical centre of Guardiafiera. The church dates back to XI century. The fact that it has been reconstructed and restored several times, on one hand doesn’t allow us a clear architectural reading, on the other hand it’s a proof of different ages. Indeed, it’s possible to see sacred stones “of rescue” on the wall, from the romantic, langobardic, gothic and baroque period.
The current appearance is particularly due to the foundation of Guardialfiera’s diocese (1061-1818) and the earthquake of 1456. The indoor of the church is made of an unique nave, the area of the presbytery is raised and it holds two marble altars and a wooden choir. There are wooden sculptures of Eighteenth Century, a stoup, a baptismal font of 1537, an ancient pipe organ and the urn with the bones of patron Saint Gaudenzio. The Paleochristian tomb has access from the south side, it is wide with round arches and cross vault. The Porta Santa is of remarkable interest, it’s one of the more ancient holy door of Christianity, it is placed on the eastern facade and it’s open on 1 and 2 June, in the occasion of the Saint Patron celebration.
