Piedicastello
“Piedicastello” is the historical centre of Guardialfiera, its first housing unit. It covers from the church of Santa Maria Assunta to Fischia S. Tommaso and it is distinguished by a connection of stairs. Its name, “Piedi- Castello” comes probably from the fact that the houses were sheltered at the base of a castle that is now disappeared. In reality, in the past, Piedicastello was surrounded by boundary walls, it had three access doors, three towers, a jail, a pillory, a mill, an hospital for poor people, the bishop’s building, the seminary and a towered building for the lord. The residences were included in some boundary wall sections and they allowed the passage from the bishop’s building to the outdoor through underground transfers.
Nowadays, what is still possible to see are the evocative alleys and the aggregation of terraced stone houses that, during Christmas time, are the background of living nativity scene. The native house of the writer Francesco Jovine (Guardialfiera 1902 -Rome 1950) is exactly among these residences; he is the author of “Signora Ava”, “L’impero in provincia” and “Le terre del Sacramento” (posthumous), with which he won the Viareggio Award in 1950.
