The Lake of Guardialfiera
Guardialfiera’s lake , also known as The Lake of “Liscione”, is an artificial reservoir dates back to 60’s – 70’s with the aim of giving potable water to the surrounding towns for domestic, industrial and agricultural use. It’s the biggest lake of Molise. Its shape is very extended and highlighted; this basin has an area of 1043 km2, its area is of 7,45 km2, with an average depth of 7-8 metres and it has a bottom that is most sandy. It houses a rich variety of fish as the European chub, the tench and the pike. Unfortunately, the lake and the dam building has submerged an ancient bridge: the Saint Antoine’s bridge, also known as the Annibale’s bridge because, according to the tradition, Annibale marched on it to reach Apulia during the second Punic war. It’s possible to partially see it mainly in summer during shallows periods. Before the fulfillment of the lake, in that area, there were the so-called “Gardens”: a sequence of hills with small farmed fields and scrub forests, lived by several farm families living of their harvest and in the magnificence of the surrounding nature.
