The Church of the Beata Vergine del Paradiso was built in 1495, as the extension of a 15th century monastery, and its current appearance is due to many structural and decorative works carried out between the 18th and the 20th century. According to tradition, the church was first built with stones obtained from demolished Ghibelline and Guelf fortifications, which were widespread on the Clusone plateau during the 16th century. The outer façade is simple and austere, while the interiors hold a wealth of paintings, chapels and evocative works of art, including the 15th century painting depicting the Madonna Addolorata – a piece with great artistic value.
Inside it, some of the artistic elements most worthy of mention include: the altar entitled ‘Visitazione’ altar by Virginio Muzio, the ‘Addolorata’, ‘Crocefisso’, ‘Santa Lucia’, ‘San Giuseppe’, and ‘Concezione’ side altars, and many works by painters from Clusone, including Domenico Carpinoni, Antonio Cifrondi, Giovan Battista Brighenti and Giovanni Trussardi Volpi.
It is a place filled with history and fascination, and still a central hub for Clusone’s religious community.
