Church of Sant’Anna

Ā

Originally part of the Convento delle Terziarie Francescane, the Church of Sant’Anna is a religious building dating back to 1487 – the date carved on the arch of the entryway.
The original external faƧade, restored in the 1990s, includes a massive figure of St. Christopher – protector of wayfarers – and many fragments of 16th century frescoes.
The pointed lunette on top of the stone entryway depicts a Nativity Scene with the Child Jesus, St. Bernardino of Siena and St. Francis of Assisi to the right, and the Madonna and S. Clare to the left. Inside the church, there are late-15th century votive images. The late 16th-century altarpiece, attributed to Domenico Carpinoni, depicts the Virgin Mary presenting baby Jesus to her mother, St. Anne. At the end of the 20th century, a secret passage was found, leading from inside the church to the convent of the clustered nuns, to allow them to attend church services without having to cross the square. This place is still a staple for the history of Clusone and its religious community.
