The austere structure of Clusone’s Palazzo Comunale dates back to the year 1000, and is a typical expression of medieval architecture. The building spreads over two floors: the lower floor is marked by a series of rounded arches, while the upper floor features numerous frescoes of coat of arms belonging to the families that ruled Clusone over the years. Constructed as a defensive stronghold for the Clusone Lords, the tower featured the typical battlements, which disappeared after the building’s height was reduced and the Orologio Fanzago was installed.
Above the west entrance to the courtyard, you can admire the fresco of a Venice lion, , depicted with an open book, which is commonly seen as a symbol of peace for the Venetian Republic. The “denonce secrete” urn – which was used in the past to report violations against healthcare standards – is visible to the right of the entrance. Above the same entryway, there is a small loggia with mythological frescoes – the Calydonian boar and several Olympian Gods. The Palazzo Comunale is still the seat of the Municipality of Clusone.
