The word sequoia instantly brings to mind the western United States, where the planet’s largest trees, reaching heights of 115 metres and diameters of 11 metres, showcase nature’s magnificence.
However, you don’t need to travel that far to find giant sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum). Simply visit the grounds of the 17^th-century Palazzo Marinoni Barca, now home to the Museo Arte Tempo (MAT).
When standing at the base of these trees, you will be amazed that such a small green space can host three conifers of this size (over 30 metres tall). The giant trees, with trunks far exceeding 4 metres in circumference (the largest measuring 5.40 m in circumference and 1.72 m in diameter), loom over the roofs of Clusone. Count Barca himself had these three sequoias shipped over from the USA in the late 19^th century.
Today, they are a fantastic addition to a historic centre famous for its frescoes and palaces and belong to the register of monumental trees of Italy.
