Over the centuries, the square has had three different names and functions.
In early medieval times, it was the main access to the city, and was dominated by a fortification, a “Rocca” belonging to the bishop, with his vassal living there in the 11th century.
For many centuries, it was the main city hub, alongside Piazza dell’Orologio, and it bore witness to the valley representatives’ pledges to the feudal lords.
According to records, it was also named “Piazza dei Pagani”, from ‘pagus’, which means hamlet or district. It was one of the two areas where the weekly market was held, including the livestock market, due to the presence of trees, water troughs and stones that cattle could be tied to.
Its third name was “Piazza dell’Acqua”, because it was built on the bed of the River Val Nember and contained an old washhouse, which was removed when the square was renovated in the 1970s.
The supporting wall dates back to the early 20th century, and was built to support the hill above it.
Today, Piazza della Rocca is a gathering place for Clusone residents, and the market is still held here every Monday.
