Monastery of San Colombano
The Bobbio Abbey is closely tied to the name of its founder, the Irish monk Columban. He is one of the most influential people in the history of the Church and in early Medieval culture. The core of the Abbey along with the surrounding area was given to Colomban by the Lombard King Agilulf and Queen Theodelinda. It constituted the little church of Saint Peter which had been built at the end of the fourth century by the Bishop of Piacenza Savino. It was located on the heights of Bobbio where the castle is today. Columban died on 23rd November 615 after only one year of residence in Bobbio. But this was time enough to establish one of the foremost cultural centres of Europe for that day. His successors inherited his tradition and expanded the dimensions of the monastery and its religious, social and cultural capacity. In the eleventh century the Abbot Agiulphe moved the entire monastic complex to its present location in order to once again expand the facilities to meet the needs of aspiring monks who arrived from across Europe.
In 1014 the Abbot Agilulphe turned the monastery into a bishopric, Bobbio became a city and Peteraldus became the first bishop and abbot. Soon the two positions were separated leading to struggles between the Episcopate and the Abbey in the twelfth century to gain power over the monastery. This struggle was settled in 1207 with the Cremona Process. The Abbot came under the authority of the Bishop. These events led to further crises in the monastery. In 1448 a group of Benedictine monks from the Church of Saint Justine in Padua were charged by Pope Niccolò V to restore the monastery to its early Medieval magnificence. They rebuilt the basilica and the monastery over the proto Roman remains. The work ended in 1530. In 1801, when Bobbio came under the control of France, the monastery was shut down and all the assets were sold by auction. Today its premises house the Abbey Museum, the City Museum and the Public Secondary School.
