The gorge of the Biedano river

Blera is located on a sinous narrow plain, bordered by the Biedano and Rio Canale rivers’ deep valleys. Due to the millenary erosion of the white rocky bank caused by the waterways, the ortography of this territory is characterized by wide open spaces surrounded by shaded gorges, where the lush green of the Nature is alternated with the reddish tufa cliffs. Along the Biedano valley there are many evidences of human presence: the steep tufa cliffs inspired the ancient Etruscans to create rock-hewn tombs, to which were added grotto shelters for disparate uses during the Medioeval and Modern times.

The gorge was extremely important for the survival of the local community: it is witnessed by the Pozzolana cave, terraces fields for the cultivation of vegetables, dams and windmills now in ruins and the Vie Cave (gigantic corridors carved into the tufa rock).
