The Fontana hydraulic complex
The Fontana hydraulic complex dates back the second half of the XIX century, it has been realized to the service of Blera’s people. The structure is composed of three main parts: the watering hole (Beveratore), the fountain (Mascarone) and the public wash house (Lavatore). The Lavatore was once covered by a gabled roof, it is now dominated by a belvedere terrace overlooking the Biedano valley.
Along Via Umberto I are located the Beveratore, still in use by the local farmers for watering animals and orchards, and the Mascarone, a stone face spilling water from its mouth, placed inside a niche.
Right above the fountain is shown the conclusion date of the works (1877) written down in Roman numbers.
The outgoing waters flow from the tanks to the Biedano valley; the hydraulic complex is still powered by an ancient Etruscan – Roman underground aqueduct using water from the Rio Canale river.
The aqueduct was to the service of the whole community that used to live in the area that goes from the nowadays historical center to the Petrolo area.
