Belvedere

The terrace of the Belvedere allows us to admire an all-round panorama of the Tiber Valley scattered with the various neighbouring towns as well as a view of part of the Apennines. In particular, we can see, from right to left: Orte, Penna in Teverina, Amelia, and Giove. In the valley, in addition to the course of the Tiber River, it is also possible to glimpse Lake Vadimo (lago Vadimone in Italian). Its importance is due to the fact that two of the most important and bloodiest battles that took place between the Etruscans and the Romans were fought precisely on its banks. In fact, in 309 BC the consul Quintus Maximus Rullianus, after crossing the Silva Cimina (as the current Mount Cimino was formerly called), inflicted a crushing defeat on the Etruscans, a prelude to a much more serious defeat that in 283 BC would lead to the final collapse of the Etruscan power.
