The children run outside, women lean out of the windows, the customers leave the bar counter, everyone is coming outside on to the street: the marching band is passing by! Marching bands have always underlined those feelings that mark the life of our towns: from the joy of festive moments to the sadness of funeral processions.
In Appignano the marching band is a heritage that has been handed down from generation to generation for almost 150 years. More precisely, from 16 January 1876, the day that the City Council held a public tender for a permanent position as a “Maestro di Musica” offering 700 liras a year to the winning candidate. The winning candidate was Ulisse Balsimelli, that soon after would write the national anthem of the Republic of San Marino.
A tradition that over the decades has helped Appignano’s younger generations to approach music. And that continues today bringing the thirty musicians of Appignano’s marching band to establish ties with other international marching band realities.
