The village
It was the year One Thousand. The earliest settlers in Alberona were a few Calabrese families who had fled their homeland.
In the centre of the town there is still an archway known as the Arco Calabrese and a street named Via Calabrese.
There is also an important fact about the town. Alberona is surrounded by three mountains: Mount Stilo, Mount Pagliarone, and Montauro. Coincidentally Stilo, Pagliarone and Montauro are the names of three towns in Calabria.
Towards the end of the 13th century, the Knights Templar took possession of this small farm and turned it into a stronghold with priory building, watchtowers, prisons, a hospital, and churches.
Traces of the warrior monks can be found throughout Alberona: stone inscriptions, the Tower of the Grand Prior, the Priory Church, Palazzo Petruccelli, and carvings over doors.
The area was ruled by the Templars until 1312, when the order lost its power and prestige, and was replaced by the Knights of St John of Malta, who retained possession of Alberona until 1600.
Influences of Emperor Frederick II, the Spanish and local brigands are still visible today.
